Day #370 – Testing The Geo-Bike

Trad: 5
Walked: 6.0 miles

I love my mountain bike, it’s great for going places close to home. But it’s rather a faff if I want to take it any distance in the car and then ride. So I’ve invested in a second-hand folding bike, won a couple of days ago on eBay – I went to collect it this morning from a guy in Springfield!

I thought I should give it a spin to test it out, so I parked a little bit away from the handily-named Chelmer Village Cycle Path hide, unfolded the machine and set off. Thankfully, it was a quick find just before the path became infested with muggles from all directions!

After a break back home, I went out again this evening to look for a few hides around King George’s Park in Brentwood. One was supposed to be a clever cache up a tree, with a line and counter-weight, but it was in rather a sorry state – the two previous finders today have already logged a Needs Maintenance, so I saw no point in adding another one.

Still, even in that state, the find earned me my first August souvenir (for finding a cache with ten or more favourite points).

Day #161 – Fun Box

Trad: 1
Walked: 0.7 miles

If I thought yesterday was wet, today the rain followed on in spades. I waved Alistair off on his journey home just as it started in earnest. So I thought I would nip around the corner for a newly-released cache less than a mile away. It was not to be! The rain made me give up after about 10 minutes. I was very soggy.

So onto one of my reserve caches which I’ve been keeping for such crap weather days – the Chelmer Village Fun Box. The find was easy enough, thank goodness, but then the “fun” began – inside the main container were half a dozen identical small tubes which had to be searched to find the actual log!

Mission accomplished, I retired home to change clothes, dry out and contemplate being back to solo caching for the time being.

Bit of a disaster this afternoon, I discovered my car wouldn’t start again. I had had trouble at the end of my road trip on 4th October this year, but it had been to the garage and had behaved itself since.

So I had to leg it over the Chelmer Village to pick up on of my “emergency” caches which I’ve been holding off finding for just such an eventuality. It was an 8-mile round trip on foot for just once cache, but the show must go on!

Day #71 – Two Bad Mice

With the car still out of action, I needed a hide relatively close to home for today’s find. I had to run errands in Chelmsford and Chelmer Village so decided on The Tale Of Two Bad Mice as my target.

The drizzle set in just as I reached the location and didn’t let up again for most of my walk. Oh well, that’s daily caching for you!
